National Grid: Job Description
Role: Lead Quantity Surveyor
Help drive efficiency in the green energy transition

As owners of Wales and England’s electricity transmission network we take green energy seriously, and are investing tens of billions of pounds over the forthcoming years.

Would you like to be involved in this vital transition?

We’re looking for an experienced Quantity Surveyor who wants more responsibility and the chance to work on high-value, complex schemes.
You’ll be providing commercial and contractual support to project teams on large-scale infrastructure projects. These include VIP projects which replace overhead lines with underground cables in areas of natural beauty, such as our £350 million project in Snowdonia. They also include our Hinkley Connection project to bring low carbon energy to six million homes.

Our customers include everyone who uses electricity in England and Wales. Acting on behalf of these people, you’ll help ensure that we deliver our projects in the most commercially effective way.

This is not a project specific role, you’ll drop in and out of projects as required. You’ll enjoy great variety and the chance to work on some of the biggest, most exciting projects in green energy, providing crucial commercial guidance across numerous schemes at any given time.
The role could provide the right person with a fantastic stepping-stone into management. As a Lead Quantity Surveyor you will be the link between management and more junior Quantity Surveyors and you may also be responsible for the line management of a small team.

“The reason I like working here so much is the opportunity I have to be
involved at the beginning of large-scale infrastructure projects to help the
transition to Net Zero.”

notice.

You can deal confidently with people at all levels of business including management, succinctly presenting facts and providing contractual advice. You can mentor others and develop their skills to build the overall capability of a team.

You are unafraid of making independent decisions using your own skill and judgement, and willing to challenge and question the decisions made by others.

You have a degree in quantity surveying or a related discipline such as construction management or construction law. You have extensive experience of quantity surveying and a strong understanding of NEC contracts (Option A, C and E).

We’d like you to already be a Chartered Surveyor, or at least working towards becoming one. Ideally you have experience on infrastructure projects, but this isn’t essential. You might have a contractor or consultant background, for example.

You also have a driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK. You are able to travel to site as and when required, and have the flexibility to work from home, a National Grid office, or site.

Training and development
If you’re not already a Chartered Surveyor, we’ll help you to become one and support you to gain chartership with RICS.

We’ll pay for external qualifications like the Association for Project Management’s project management qualification (PMQ), and contractual management qualifications such as NEC project management accreditation courses. You’ll be trained in a wide range of areas, including risk management and contract management software, safety and National Grid on-site authorisations. You’ll also have access to LinkedIn Learning’s 16,000 expert led courses.

One of the most exciting things about the role is the management opportunities it can lead to. For example, you might eventually become a Contracts and Commercial Manager, or explore management opportunities in other areas of National Grid, such as procurement, project management or regulation.
